Grootberg Lodge

Welcome to Journeys Namibia’s flagship lodge, the first middle market establishment to be wholly owned by a conservancy. For the initial development the European Union funded the project through the Ministry of Environment and Tourism’s Development Programme. At the same time, the private sector was called in to provide the training and management skills until the local community becomes self-sustainable.

Your hosts at Grootberg Lodge are members of the rural community, trained by Journeys Namibia to deliver excellent service for international guests in a home-away-from-home atmosphere.

Marvel at the breath-taking view of the Klip River Valley below while lounging on the deck or cooling down in our infinity pool. The rooms are comfortably appointed. Walls are clad with the ancient lava rock of the area. Explore the landscape, rich in geological and botanical wonders, encounter stunning wildlife and get acquainted with the traditions of the #Khoadi//Hoas people.

Activities & Experiences

Namibian hospitality is legendary, and nowhere does it become more apparent than at Grootberg Lodge. While eco-tourism is Grootberg’s main focus, members of the local community ensure that your stay will create golden memories. It is for good reason that through Grootberg Lodge the #Khoadi //Hoas Conservancy has won a place among the 2020 Sustainable Destinations Top 100 in recognition of its efforts towards responsible tourism and distinctive appeal.

The thrill of adventure sets in as soon as you arrive at the lower gate before negotiating the 4×4 route up to the lodge. During your stay you will be immersed in nature and encounter some of the larger inhabitants of this unique landscape. The abundance and diversity of species that are found in the ≠Khoadi //Hoas Conservancy is nevertheless a far cry from the way things were until shortly before the turn of the previous century.

What you can expect to see now, ranges from common antelopes such as kudu, oryx and springbok to the more elusive mammals such as aardwolves, civets and wild cats. If you are lucky you might even encounter some of the big predators, like lions and leopards.

Our most popular excursions are the half-day drive in search of desert-adapted elephants, and the almost full-day guided tracking of free-roaming black rhino, one of the planet’s most endangered species.

Scenic evening drives across the plateau present fantastic photographic opportunities while discovering the rich plant and animal life that thrives there.

When traversing the plateau, you will encounter a wide variety of wild residents: springbok, zebra, kudu and oryx are easily spotted during drives and guided walks. Klipspringer, though shy, are often seen leaping gracefully from ledge to ledge on the steep cliffs. Possible sightings of predators are not unlikely, especially lions, as the population has increased after years of draught.

A visit to the #Khoadi//Hoas community is a favourite activity for most guests to participate in. The warm cordiality with which visitors are received touches every heart. Learn more about the local culture and customs as you are invited into the midst of the community.

Grootberg is a paradise for nature lovers. With so much to do, you will want to stay a bit longer or hopefully come back for a second visit.
