Just east of Aus, Klein Aus Vista: Desert Horse Inn is nestled in the granite-gneiss hills with magnificent views of the landscape.
This is the area where the Namib Desert begins to merge with golden grasses, where wild horses roam free and people once gathered with diamond dreams. Klein Aus Vista: Desert Horse Inn provides the perfect base to explore south-western Namibia, as a destination in itself or a perfect halfway stop en route from the canyon to the red dunes of Sossusvlei or vice versa.
The attractive and airy rooms are built in a style indicative of the late century farmhouse and painted a deep, rich sienna that glows alluringly in the late afternoon sunshine. Put up feet on your veranda enjoying Klein Aus calm, partake in a day or sunset drive or explore the numerous mountain-bike and walking trails that skirt the rocky hills.

Put up feet on your veranda at Klein Aus Vista, partake in a day or sunset drive or explore the numerous mountain-bike and walking trails that skirt the rocky hills. Here you will discover old WWI ramparts, an old Hudson motorcar riddled with bullet holes from an almost-forgotten shoot-out with diamond smugglers, viewpoints with extraordinary vistas, springbok on the plains and, if lucky, klipspringer poised on the rocky slopes. Further afield, visit the wild horses at the Garub waterhole, 20 km to the west, and the old diamond mining town of Kolmanskop and Lüderitz, 100km onwards. Listen to the thump of balls rolling in the bygone bowling alley. Return in the late afternoon your eyes sparkling like diamonds to Klein Aus peace.

“We certainly enjoyed our stay at the Desert Horse Inn. Beautiful setting and friendly staff. Nice room! We only missed an umbrella in the room as most Gondwana lodges do have one. During our stay we experienced heavy rains for 2 days. Walking to restaurant was very wet. Must say, it last rained there in 2013! We were happy for the local people although guests in the Eagle’s Guest rooms were not that happy due to leakage of water in their rooms! Overall this lodge is certainly value for money. We will be back! ” –Jos B
“Pity we didn’t stay two nights. It would have been nice to try one of the Eagle Nest chalets as well as staying at the main lodge as they seemed very unique. The lodge is lovely with a nice deck. The food was good but not much options for vegetarians apart from rice and veg but that’s typical for Namibia. Lovely pool and a nice gift shop. Stay here to visit Kolmanskop as Luderitz is disappointing. Wild horses in the area. Gondwana is generally great value for the quality.” –finny123
“The lodge and camp-site is perfectly situated. Everything is kept very clean and tidy and all of the staff are friendly and happy to assist! The lodge is beautiful and well furnished. We will definitely stay there again. –Christo P
